Details Of Workers Memorial Day Of Action Events Scheduled Around The UK

The TUC this year is calling on health and safety representatives, trades councils and safety campaigners to make Workers Memorial Day (28th April) a day of action to defend health and safety from the Coalition Government's attacks on regulation, enforcement, cuts and refusal to tackle the massive toll of workplace deaths and health and safety breaches.

The day is also marked around the world and is now truly international.

ENGLAND

Birmingham
Saturday 28th April: WMD commemoration event will take place at 12:30 at the Workers Commemoration Stone in the grounds of St Phillips Cathedral, Colmore Row, City Centre, Birmingham, where a service to remember the dead will also be held and wreaths will be laid.

Blackburn
Saturday 28th April: King William Street, Outside Old Town Hall. Defend workers' Safety Against government Attacks on Regulation and enforcement.  Assemble 13.00 at the Town Hall step for speeches. At 13.45 march to the Workers Memorial Tree at Northgate led by lone piper. At 14.00 - Two minutes silence and laying of wreaths.

Bradford
Saturday 28th April: Bradford Memorial Garden, rear of Bradford City Hall, Centenary Square, Bradford. Rally at the Workers' Memorial plaque. 12 noon on Saturday 28th April 2012 for a minutes silence followed by speakers, laying of wreaths and a street performance. Bristol
Friday 27th April: At 9am there will be the wreath laying event at the new Workers Memorial Tree at the rear of the Council Offices. Ribbons will be tied to the tree for those who have died in the South West because of their work.
At 12 noon there will be one minutes silence and Council Staff will be wearing the IWMD purple ribbons for the day.

Saturday 28th April:  there will be a March to protect health and safety. Meet at the bottom of Union Street at 10:30 and walk up to castle green via Broadmead at 10:45 to rally be at the memorial tree at
Castle Green for 11am for speeches.

Chelmsford
Saturday 28th April: Saturday 28 April 2012. From 11.30am to 1pm Chelmsford TUC and their colleagues in Chelmsford Against The Cuts will be distributing leaflets and providing health & safety information in the High Street close to Lloyds Bank. At 1.15pm we will assemble in Central Park, Chelmsford, at the Memorial Tree, close to the lake and bowling green where a short memorial event will take place.

From 28 April - 4 May, there is a Workers Memorial Day Exhibition at Chelmsford Library, Public Square Chelmsford.

Saturday 28th April: A WMD Remembrance March and service will take place at St Thomas' Church, Stanley Crook, near Crook, Co Durham. Assemble at 1pm (car park at east end of the village, near the Foresters Guest House DL15 9RY).

The march will move off at 1.30pm, with a band. We will march the three quarters of a mile to St Thomas' Church, Stanley Crook, where a service will be held. Sandwiches and refreshments will be available. For details email Ben Sellers at secretary.cdtuc@gmail.com

A Thompsons TU Solicitors and a Hazards Campaigner will give presentations on the Tory/Lib.Dem Coalition Health and Safety Attacks. This will be followed at 12-00 noon by a short outdoor meeting and commemoration at the Workers Memorial Tree in the Town Hall Square Leicester.

Saturday 28th April: March and rally. Gather near CIS Building, Corporation Street /Miller Street at 12 noon. The March will move off at 12.30 led by a band and march up Corporation Street, and Cross Street into Albert Square for a rally. At 13:00 there will be a minutes silence to 'Remember the Dead'. Speakers will include trade union safety reps, members of FACK and MPs who will speak on 'Fighting like hell for the Living' against the current government attacks on workers' health and safety. Saturday 28th April: A WMD Memorial event and Wreath laying event takes place at the Denton Burn roundabout at the Joe Willis Memorial Plaque, Western Bypass Junction of A1 and A69, Joe Willis was a UCATT member who was working on the Western Bypass when he was killed by a reversing lorry in the late 1980's. The UCATT Regional Chair and Secretary will be among those attending. All Welcome.

Oxfordshire
Saturday 28th April: Oxford and District Trades Union Council are organising a special combined May Day Rally 2012 and International Workers Memorial Day Event in Witney (The Prime Minister's Constituency).

Congregating at the Green from 1100hrs, and then departing on a march at about 1200hrs.

Stopping at the Marriott’s Shopping Centre, there we will pause to mark International Workers Memorial Day and to also pay tribute to Altin Balla who lost his life when he was crushed and trapped by steel girders while operating a cherry picker.

The March will then move off to David Cameron’s constituency Office and then back up the High Street to the Green where a number of speakers will address the gathering.

At the end of the celebrations in Witney there will be a social event at the Far from the Madding Crowd Pub in St. Giles, Oxford. This year the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) Health and Safety Committee will be marking Workers Memorial Day on 26th April.

The Committee has organised a tree dedication ceremony in the grounds of NI Governments, Stormont Estate at 2.45pm.  After this there will be a reception with some light refreshments at 3.30 in the Long Gallery, Stormont.
